The Crow Indian Reservation's first straw-bale house was built for Peggy White and her four children in 1999, thanks to the University of Washington School of Architecture, the University of Washington Department of Construction Management, the Red Feather Development Group, the Kelly Foundation, and other volunteers. Peggy was so grateful for this blessing that she founded the Center Pole Foundation.
The Straw-Bale Home Ownership Project assists homeless Native American families to build their own sustainable housing. To volunteer or for more information, contact Dan Kelly at 703.212.0392, or dmkelly1@erols.com
